How to Grow Organic Roses

Many people are now getting into growing all things organic. Farmers are doing it with produce and meats, so it is natural that you might want to grow your roses that way also. Many people have problems using the pesticides and insecticides that go along with growing roses and keeping them healthy. Well, now you can use more natural methods of growing your roses. I will show you how in step by step detail. 1. Each bush that you want to plant will need to have a foot of space all around it so that the flowers can get the proper amount of circulation. It also helps to prevent leaf diseases for your roses. 2. You will want to purchase organic roses. You will want to buy roses that have a sturdy green stem and no blemishes on them. Bare root roses are best for this. 3. Along with roses that have green stems, you will need to look for stems that have evenly spaced leaves that are close together. 4. You will need to use well drained soil so that you can promote the healthy growth that will give the flower all of the water and nutrients that it needs from the root to the flower’s head. 5. Fix the soil so that you can build organically. You should use a raised bead if drainage is a constant problem. Ask your local garden center rep about how best to fix your soil to be organically correct. 6. Soak your bare root roses in a large container of composte tea for many hours before you plant them. 7. You must mound up enough good organic sol that is mixed with an equal amount of composte in the middle so that you can spread the roots out and down from where they meet at the trunk. 8. Now, plant the rose at the point where the stem breaks into the root so that it is at soil level, or approximately 1 inch below the top level if you live in an area that is prone to hard winters. 9. You have to check your bare root roses first. If your roots grow out in a tight circle, you have to cut a straight slice down each of its four sides. A knife is good for this. Then you will dig a hole that is 2 inches deeper than the container and at least twice as wide. 10. Mix your organic soil garden soil with an equal amount of composte and use your hands to gently spread the roots into the soil mix. 11. You have to mulch to help you prevent your roses from being exposed to weeds, and water stress complications. It will also ensure that your roses remain at their lowest possible maintenance level. 12. You must feed your roses organically also. Fertilize with organic fertilizer and maintain a regular watering schedule. 13. Water your organic roses deep at the planting, and then once every week after that during growing season so that you can promote deep roots. Watering in the early morning is best. 14. You must cultivate the top inch of your soil around each of your roses and fertilize on a monthly basis with a balanced organic fertilizer. You will need a good granular type of fertilizer that you can work into the soil. Either that, or you can use a fish emulsion or seaweed based product that you can mix with water because it has all of the necessary nutrients that a healthy flower needs. Check the ingredients listed on the labels to ensure that they have nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, iron and calcium. 15. To help protect your bed against the various types of pests and insects that can plague your roses, put sticky yellow bars every ten feet to catch them. 16. You may use an organic pesticide if the problem is bad. 17. If your pest problem is severe enough, you may use insecticidal soap to spray over your roses. Now you have all of the necessary knowledge that you need to grow your own bed of earth friendly roses. Your flowers will be just as beautiful as those that are not grown organically, and will likely have the healthiest life span that a rose can get. Organic roses have some of the best color and “immune systems” that a rose can have. The fragrance of them can’t be beaten. A FAST, FUN, PROFITABLE
CANDLE FUNDRAISER

By, Robin Ramirez

I. Understand your sale-type options and determine which would be best for your group.

1. Have candles on-hand to sell directly, collecting payment at time of sale. ; or,
2. Using order brochures, filling your orders on a specified pick-up or delivery date and collecting monies at time of sale ; or,
3. Using order brochures, filling your orders on a specified pick-up or delivery date and collecting monies when candles delivered.

II. Brochure candle sales:

1. Order and distribute brochures with an informational selling tip-guide (include information below) and a money collection item (e.g. envelope) to each participant or parent. Be sure to include your sale start and stop dates, as well as the expected date of expected candle distribution with your selling tips. It is always best to provide information to participants in writing with a contact phone number to alleviate confusion. If you have a large group and your group leaders time is limited, divide your group into teams and have each team report to one team captain who will total and tally their candle numbers and monies. Then all sales/monies can be totaled by the group leader prior to ordering. You may also consider requesting or purchasing a sample of each candle to show possible supporters. If you can keep from burning these candles yourself and don t let someone buy them before your order comes in, you can sell them after your orders are filled.
2. Keep copies of your participant s sale sheets. After your total sales are tallied and monies collected and verified, order your candles, distribute them to your participants/parents, or team leaders, with their original order sheet. Check with participants in one week to ensure candle delivery to supporters, and offer delivery/contact assistance as needed.

III. On-hand candle sales:

1. Sort/mix candles as needed and distribute our to fundraiser participants, dividing into teams if group size necessitates, using a tracking form to log participants name, phone number, parents name (as necessary), home address, number of candles received, and date due. Have participant or parent sign waiver or payment agreement as necessary and maintain with your records. Give each participant, in writing, information on selling tips, contact phone number, available scents/types, sale price and date monies and candles due back.

2. Selling tips for participants should include: Information on candle contents, any quantity or top-seller incentives (if your candle provider does not offer this, you should consider incorporating it into your program yourself if your participants are children or youth to increase your profits), burning safety and selling ideas.

3. Example of selling tips:

a) Friends, Family, and routine contacts: Ask family members and relatives to purchase candles to support your cause, and remind them that these affordable candles make great gifts! Ask friends and acquaintances to support your cause. Ask people at places you go throughout the week to support your cause (e.g. bank, library, hair salon, fitness center, restaurants, etc.) Keep a few candles with you at all times during your sale period so that as routine opportunities arise, you are prepared to sell.

Selling at the supermarket:
A fast way to sell many candles is to set up a small table and chairs at your local supermarket.
1. Phone the store manager, explaining what you are doing, and get permission to raise your funds at the store.
2. Be sure to display a sign and always keep the table full of candles (avoid direct sun-light!).
3. The best time to sell at the supermarket is on the weekends.
4. Working in pairs, one person can let people know about the fund-raiser as they walk in the store and extend an invitation to stop and look at the candles on their way out. The second person can approach the shoppers as they leave the store and ask if they would support their effort by purchasing a candle. It is best to ask them to buy on their way out of the store.

Workplace, School, Office:
You can place a basket of candles on your desk or work area with the price and group s name. You usually do not have to ask people to buy. Often candles sell themselves. Always check with your employer to obtain permission.

Social gathering selling and special events:
Most people are willing to support fund-raising organizations during social gatherings.
1. Make sure you have permission, set up and fill a table with candles.
2. Display a sign indicating the purpose and price.

4. Wrap it up:

If possible, call each participant or remind them at your previous meeting of the date candles/monies are due back.

Receive monies and unsold candles, logging transaction on your original tracking sheet and zeroing out each participants obligation.

Settle up with your candle supplier as agreed to maintain a good working relationship for many more successful sales to come!

Black Roses - Fact or Fiction

Throughout the course of time, black roses have conjured up a variety of symbolic meanings. From unnatural worlds to death, vengeance, farewell or rebirth, the black rose has come to be viewed in a number of different ways depending on the occasion. Though symbolic meanings may differ, the interesting truth is that black roses do not even exist. What many believe to be black roses are actually dark-red colored roses, which have such a deep color that they appear to be black. Perhaps someday not too far in the future a black rose will exist as many in the field are working with the myriad of rose varieties and colors to come up with the coveted black formula. In the meantime, there are quite a few roses come which come close. Here are a couple of the more well-known varieties of “black roses” gardened in different climates all over the world: Black Magic One of the darkest roses, this rose has black buds before it blooms into velvety garnet flowers. Black Baccara Perhaps the darkest, this blackberry colored rose also tends to be blacker before its blooms begin to open into velvety textured petals, growing up to four feet tall with flowers June through August. Black Beauty This small flower begins as a burgundy bud and opens into an almost black velvet bloom. The “black roses” should be grown in sunlight, but be attentive to potential sunburn problems. If you plan to make bouquets from your garden and are looking for something a bit darker, try adding a touch of black dye to the water in your vase.
